Because not all pages within an application require login, checking for the presence of a session variable may not be the best way to go. What you may want to do is set the loginStorage attribute of CFAPPLICATION to "Session" rather than its default value of "Cookie". This way if your session expires, your login will expire as well, and the user will automatically be taken to log in again if he attempts to access a part of the site that requires authentication.
