I had thought the same thing and attempted it last week.  I can't remember what the error was that I recieved - perhaps something about not being able to delete a tag.  If it should work, it could have been user error. . .

I don't know what the exact issues is, but can't you just delete the old
tag and then create a new tag (by copying the 1.0.1 branch into the tags
directory)?
