It looks like the problem was your display driver. In order to support suspend, the driver for your display may need to be updated. And display adapters from some vendors will probably never be made to support CPR, because the vendor has to provide sufficient programming information to fully initialize the device without reliance on BIOS. Many (most!) video hardware vendors do not provide this information. (There are some workarounds available in certain other circumstances -- I think, for example, that Nvidia has developed their own Nvidia-specific solution. In any case, at least some Nvidia displays suspend properly.)
