FWIW, when the system fails to suspend, I see the following
in /var/adm/messages:

Sep  5 12:04:52 seb genunix: [ID 535284 kern.notice] System is being suspended

And nothing more.  I eventually manually poweroff, at which point the
next messages come from the system coming back up:
