Replying to my own post... This is now working I believe. I moved the script from /etc/pm/sleep.d to /usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d and it behaves as expected...
I thought both dirs were searched...
I still see a lot more scripts getting executed than I would expect since my script is named 000shutdown-sleep so should get triggered first and no other scripts would need to be undone??
