I know this discussion. The groups available in pmapper are just as 'normal'
groups in Mapserver. I created the extra group definition because Mapscript
does not support transparent grouping of layers like the Mapserver CGI.
You would like to group layers thematically I guess. That is currently not
supported. It is on my plans for the near future and will be sort of
'category' (because 'group' has its fixed meaning in Masperver).
It's close to what you want except that I will not create the possibility to
enable/disable categories, just use them as separation for thematically
similar datasets. Switching whole categories on/off would cause somewhat
more work and is typically more confusing to users.
so there shall be something like
+ Administrative Data
x Communes
- class
x Localities
- class 1
- class 2
+ Hydrography
x water courses
- class xyz
x lakes
...
might be available in the next weeks, I hope.
