Walter, 

is the image that gives you the error the map image, the reference image or
the scalebar?  What information does give you an image viewer about the
color depth? I tried using exactly the same settings and it worked, the
images had just 24 bits. I used Mapserver 4.6 on Linux, GD version 2.0.33.

pmapper uses the format specified in the map file , see print.pdf:

$this->map->selectOutputFormat($_SESSION["imgFormat"]);  

I knew a similar problem with the reference image in older MS versions, that
seems to be solved now (it did not take the settings from the map file for
the outputformat).
