Armin, of course you are responsible for decisions on this matter, but I disagree with you, I also had some difficulties the first time I used pmapper. I think there are 2 case, if you have root access you can do whatever you want (i.e. rename php_mapscript to whatarever you like) and in this case you can keep many versions and change symlinks when you want to test a different version, or you can also manipulate php.ini for including intead of dl(). But what if (it happened to me) you have no access to php.ini or to the filesystem and the syadmin named php_mapscipt46.so? Then you have only one choice: hack pmapper code. IMHO a better solution would be to insert the whole dl name literal instead of relying on the assumption that an underscore must be present in the dl name.
