Funny how as soon as I sent this message I solved the problem: this is for anyone suffering the same issue:
I had debug on in my mapfile which caused mapserver to return some extra info (msDrawMap(): Layer 0 (Framework), 0.110s ...) which was causing problems in xmlhttp.js.
