I've thought about it also, it would be a great improvement. One problem could be the server load, all the smooth panning solutions I've seen so far, are based on "static" tiles saved on the server, the scaling is not continuous as in pmapper but at fixed steps, and the tiles (for all available layers) are prepared and cached on the server. One of the reasons why openlayers, gmap or ka-map are so fast in switching layers on-off or changing layer order or tranparency is because all this stuff happens on the client. I feel that supporting this kind of systems in p.mapper would not be a trivial task. BTW a proof-of-concept could maybe be realized just by downloading in the background adjacent 8 images and repeating the process at each pan move (pay attention to potential memory leaks).
