For my first question, I found the answer: just add the attribute "compare" 
into "<field..." in search.xml. e.g: field type="n" name="POPULATION" 
description="POPULATION >="  wildcard="0" compare=">=" />
I did it by trying to read the source code. Are there  any guides about how to 
customize "search" with search.xml ?
If possible, can you write this guide ?
