OpenLayers uses this "compression" mechanism, and shrinking it has a dramatic improvement in loading times. I support Alessandro's idea. One may want to check out OpenLayers' approach to compression (the "build" subdirectory of the extracted OL archive) and compare it with Alessandro's idea.
