George Sorry, I cannot tell you anything about Mapserver and SDE layers. I don't know if they use query syntax as Postgis and Oracle or as shapefile layers. I would guess that 'normal' search without any special settings (like 'options' or 'suggest') should work without problem.
Otherwise you will need to try testing things on your own, including modifying the code responsible for preparing and executing the query (mainly search.php and query.php). I do not have access to SDE and I'm not planning to test this.
