My co-worker Mr. Dennis Snodgrass used a simpler approach to search

character attributes using a SQL Server 2005 SDE database.

Use a oracle layer type:

<searchitem name="Manhole" description="Manhole ID">

      <layer type="oracle" name="Manhole">

            <field type="s" name="FACILITYID" description="Manhole ID"
wildcard="0" />

            <sql>SELECT DISTINCT sql_test FROM SManhole WHERE FACILITYID
= '^[search]'</sql>

        </layer>

    </searchitem>
