I do not know, I was able to get the function to work on two machines (Ubuntu and Debian), and the only thing I did beyond what I described was also put support for Export to XLS: $ sudo pear install OLE channel://pear.php.net/OLE-1.0.0RC1 $ sudo pear install Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer and then $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart Try installing these packages more.
