Using hash character as the first character in a line for a numbered list
is standard wiki markup.across most wiki engines.

Another way to use a hash at the start of a sentence, without removing the
markup rule, is
-< # text
or
-> # text

The use of
##
###
####
etc provides for indented numbered lists
