What about this off-the-wall idea?

working.d/ # top-level writable directory

I'm half-wondering if we should call it something like

   writeable-private/
       wiki.d/
       temp.d/

It makes it very clear what the directory is for, with the downside of being a really long directory name.

I like it. The long name isn't really that much of a problem. In the code, won't we store it in a variable anyway?

As for administrators accessing it, I don't think it happens frequently enough to mandate a short, but obscure, name.

Could 'open' and 'closed' be useful as synonyms?
