Hmmm, very interesting. Maybe a variation of the $[...] syntax?
$[en:hello|es:hola|de:hallo|hello]
This would say to display 'hello', 'hola', or 'hallo' depending
on the current userlang, otherwise it uses the default XLPage
translation of 'hello'. Or something like that.
