Interesting idea... but I think it could lead to confusion. And it really improves things only for admins that cannot use RecipeCheck or SiteAnalyzer to check their recipes using the pmwiki.org copy of recipelist. (Admins that can access the pmwiki.org-based checks can do a check immediately following an PmWiki update without any extra work.) Part of the problem is that any backup recipelist in the distribution would be current only as of the release date. So, if we go for a few weeks without any new releases of PmWiki, then admins downloading the latest PmWiki release would be checking against an outdated version of the recipe list. Things may get slightly worse if/when recipes are updated in response to new PmWiki releases (e.g., to take advantage of a new feature or to fix a problem associated with the new PmWiki release). Admins comparing against the recipelist from the distribution would be easily misled into thinking all of their recipes are up-to-date with respect to the current PmWiki version, or confused by the fact that a recipe isn't working even though a recipe check shows it as being up-to-date for a given PmWiki release. Still, an slightly out-of-date recipe check might be better for some than no recipe check at all. What I'd like to do is come up with a standard place where an admin can put a copy of the latest recipelist file, and then have ?action=recipecheck fall back to using this file when it's unable to retrieve the latest file from pmwiki.org. Then we can see if it's a good idea to include a recipelist file as part of the distribution. Perhaps we should put a note about doing recipe checks into the PmWiki.Upgrades page?
