Hmm. That actually should've worked. :-) In my other message I really meant only that one cannot use page variable substitutions inside of (:template default:) and expect them to work. Specifying a page variable filter, as you've done here, ought to work. This is definitely a bug (I even know where), and I'll fix it shortly.
