Despite the fact that all of my wikis expose the version number in the 
page footer, I still like the idea that I control where it appears and 
who can see it.

But of all the suggestions made so far, I think that a Site.Versions 
page would be the best repository for version info from any of the 
scripts that make such info available. I would then have a "one stop 
shop" where I could see the PmWiki version, the skin version, and so on. 
If I wanted to, I could read protect the page.
