I don't think these are documented yet.
Pm said he will adapt this syntax for replacement variables.
Fox and FeralFormattedEntry uses them in templates as placeholders for
field values.
For instance the name of an input control will be matched by a var in
a template page of this form {$$name}, then the value entered will be
used in place of the {$$name} placeholder in the template.
