Coincidentally, I just implemented a very simple solution for this on BoltWire that might spark some ideas for doing this in PmWiki. The syntax is slightly different, but the concept is quite workable.
http://www.boltwire.com/index.php?p=forum.snippets.1034 In BoltWire, [( )] is the equivalent of PmWiki's markup expressions, and {count} is a variable that indicates the key (index) to each entry in the search return.
