I have to agree that I use (...) rather infrequently, so I guess it doesn't matter if we use {...} instead of (...).
[[<http://www.>pmichaud.com]]<...> are used everyday by everybody in email addresses in the Patrick R. Michaud <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> form, where the <...> part is the "target" and the other part is the optional "label".
