http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/Cookbook/Mini tell me that I have to write
Attach:Groupname./image.jpeg or Mini:Group./picture.jpg to access
files in another group, i.e. with a dot before the slash.

But seemingly it works also without the dot, i.e.
Attach:Groupname/image.jpeg and Mini:Group/picture.jpg.

Is the documentation incorrect or are there any drawbacks not adding
the dot?

If in the same group you have a page with a name, same as the other group, the dot is required.

For example, if you are in the Main.HomePage and you want to link to Galleries.Galleries, but you also have a page Main.Galleries, a link to Attach:Galleries/image.jpeg may not be what you mean. With the dot, it is clear that you link to a file in the Galleries/ group; without the dot you link to a file attached to a Main.Galleries page in the same group.
