Deeply Ingrained Anti-Jewish Sentiment
...not only is Israel identified as an enemy, but also Jews and Zionism.
The vilification of all three, and the total rejection of any amicable
settlement with any of them, are what makes them intractable in the eyes
of the Arabs and Muslims. Moreover, Israel is conceived as the long arm of
the West in the midst of the Arab and Muslim worlds, in order to
facilitate their demise, and world Jewry, by means of the world Zionist
movement, as the predominant satanic power which reaches its tentacles to
all corridors of political and economic power so as to undermine Western
societies from within and take over the world.

Excerpts from Chapter 8, Islamikaze:
Manifestations of Islamic Martyrology
by Raphael Israeli
(Frank Cass, 2003)
The Jews, Zionism and Israel:
An Evil Unto Itself

One would have expected that Israel, a tiny country compared to the vast
power of the West, would not have attracted so much scorn, drawn so much
hatred and carried so much weight in the Muslim fundamentalist discourse,
almost equal to the satanic West. Many explanations are possible, notably
that Israel is not only considered part and parcel of that hated Western
world, but in some ways its vanguard and a dagger in the heart of the
Muslim world. Secondly, unlike other Western countries which are remote,
to which one is not obliged to travel, and whose ways one is not obliged
to emulate, Israel's proximity forces the Muslims, especially those
directly involved in the Arab-Israeli dispute, to face her on an almost
daily basis, interact with her, respond to her challenges and take
cognizance of her. True, the West is present everywhere in the Muslim
world, in one way or another, but its presence as a guest or a partner can
be ejected physically and rejected spiritually, while Israel's presence is
political, permanent, independent and sovereign. Thirdly, the State of
Israel is the state of the Jews and of the Zionists and therefore cannot
be better than the sum total of its components; and since the Jews are
looked down upon by Arabs, and Zionism is considered evil and racist,
there is an incentive for the Muslims to eradicate it. Finally, there is
pure resentment born out of jealousy: the startling success of the Jewish
State is a thorn in the side for the Muslim environment, for not only did
it succeed in acting against the expected stereotypical image of the
'cowardly and wretched' Jew, but in doing so it exposed the helplessness,
hopelessness and backwardness of the Muslim world.
THE DEEPLY INGRAINED ANTI-JEWISH SENTIMENT

The sources of anti-Jewish, anti-Israeli and anti-Zionist sentiment in the
Muslim world have been dealt with extensively in many scholarly writings.
Here, suffice it to recapitulate the main layers of this attitude:
firstly, the deeply ingrained negative stereotypes of Jews in the Muslim
sources, those labelled 'descendants of dwarfs and monkeys' both in the
Holy Qur'an itself, which sometimes lumps together the Scriptuary Peoples,
namely Christians and Jews, and sometimes singles out the Jews, and in
Hadith literature, where vast portions are devoted to the denigration of
the Jews. Secondly, the Christian anti-Semitic themes of the Blood Libel,
the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and the world Jewish conspiracy were
imported, lock stock and barrel, by Christian Arabs in the nineteenth
century, into the already existing vast arsenal of anti-Jewish
recriminations and grievances against the Jews. Thirdly, when Zionism
heralded the return of Jews to their homes in Palestine, the Arab and
Muslim resistance to that idea wove together all these anti-Jewish and
anti-Zionist stereotypes into a powerful fabric of political and military
opposition. And when the State of Israel was founded in 1948, and the
fears of the Arabs and the Muslims became a reality, new waves of
anti-Semitism, this time translated into anti-Zionism and anti-Israelism,
erupted, following the fortunes of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Every time
the dispute rose to new summits, for example, after the Palestinian
Intifadah and the 11 September horrors, the Arabs and Muslims lashed out
mercilessly at the Jews, Israel and Zionism, while during the rare periods
of tranquility and conciliation, those eruptions were likely to subside.

[...]

In an article published in the establishment al-Ahram, an enlightened
Coptic scholar, Dr Babawi, lambasted the US Congress for not stopping
'Israel's artillery attacks on the Nativity and Al-Aqsa mosque', and urged
American Muslims and Copts to demonstrate against 'madman Sharon, who
began to behave like a madman after he was hit in his sensitive place by a
bullet during the 1948 War, which left him with only one testicle',
something which has affected him psychologically, and he has become a
'crazy psychopath using power to hide his weak point'.

The Bishop of the Assyrian Church in Lebanon said that although the
leaders of the Christian world today are not Jewish, they are led by Jews,
whose faith is the 'enemy of God, of the people and of Christianity'. He
cites Jesus as having said to the Jews: 'You are the sons of Satan, and
you do the will of your father Satan', to which they answered 'No, we are
not the sons of Satan, we are the sons of Abraham.' He replied: 'Had you
been the sons of Abraham you would be acting in accordance with the acts
and precepts of Abraham. Therefore, you are the sons of Satan.'

This deep hatred for the Jews, coming from Christian Arabs who ought
logically to have common cause against the overwhelming majority of the
Muslims in the East, defies logic and is often exploited by Muslim
fundamentalists and others to prove the universal disgust for the Jews.
Many of the anti-Jewish stereotypes among the Muslims are imported from
Western Christianity, while others are Muslim-made, but they liberally
borrow from each other, through the intermediary of the Eastern Christians
in the Arab world who master both cultures and traditions, including
anti-Semitism, and who have not been reformed by the recent far-reaching
concessions made to Judaism by the Catholic Church. Moreover, during the
Aqsa Intifadah, which has pushed to the forefront of Palestinian existence
the Islamikaze martyrs, some Christians found a similarity between them
and Christ's martyrdom. A few quotes from Christian-Arab clerics and
intellectuals will illustrate these points:

"We kneel before the Palestinian people in the Nativity. He starves and
thirsts, but he is steadfast. These words were not born in a vacuum. The
one who said 'I am hungry' when he was on the Cross was our Lord Jesus
himself~E Our Palestinian people in Bethlehem died like a crucified
martyr, on the rock guarded by the Israeli soldiers armed from head to toe
who have no compassion, love, life or tolerance - The Jew has a principle
from which we suffer and which he tries to impose on people: the principle
of the Gentiles. To him, the Gentile is a slave. They give the
Palestinians working in Israel only a piece of bread, and tell them: 'This
piece of bread that you eat is taken from our children, and we give it to
you so you will live as free men in your land, but as a proletariat and
slave in Israel, to serve us.' The Protocols of the Elders of Zion are
based on this principle, and anyone who reads the Protocols feels that we
are in this period with the Jews."

"The Church, the Pope, the Christians and the New Testament clearly state
that, according to Christian belief, the ones who killed Jesus are the
Jews, and there is no way to deny or renounce this - The Jews are the ones
who killed Jesus; after him they killed the Christians, and after them the
Muslims. Now they are again killing both Muslims and Christians.
Throughout history we have seen that the Jews persecuted the Christians at
the beginning of the Church, and now again, they are persecuting the
Church, and Islam - As is known throughout the world, even in our time,
they always accuse the Christians - The case of Pope Pie XII is bad
enough. They accuse him of terrible things - They attack the Church
because the Pope was not as strict as they wanted in protecting Jews from
Nazism-while the Jews found shelter only in the Church and with Christian
families."

Jews have been inextricably linked to the Christians in Muslim imagery, in
the depiction of the two faiths that are, in Muslim eyes, inimical to
Islam and seeking its destruction. Therefore, as we have seen above,
whether it is an attack against the West, or accusing the West of acts of
barbarism and the like, Jews and Christians are lumped together, since
they share that same verse in the Opening Sura of the Holy Qur'an. The
same senior psychiatrist, Dr Adel Sadeq, cited above, who attacked
President Bush and 'Western ignorance' of the Arab and Muslim psyche,
reserves an even harsher scenario for Israel, a totalistic and politicidal
war to the finish that knows no concession or compromise and which, if
heeded, should signal the escalation of the Arab-Israeli dispute. His
message is chilling:

"The message to Israel is that we will not cease - It is very important to
convey this message - The child who threw a stone in 1993 today wraps
himself in an explosive belt. Some Israeli politicians take this into
account, and say to themselves: 'This was will never end.' As long as
there is a single Palestinian left, the war will not end - What is
happening now indicates one thing: Israel will not exist for ever. We as
Arabs must know that this war will not end. The conflict will continue.
This conflict is not over land alone - This war will not end, and anyone
who deludes himself that there will be peace must understand that Israel
did not come to this region to love the Arabs or to normalize relations
with them. Anyone who thinks that peace will come, either now or in the
future, has limited historical vision. Either we will exist or we will not
exist. Either the Israelis or the Palestinians-there is no third option."

"There are no Israeli civilians. They are all plunderers. History teaches
this. I am completely convinced that the psychological effect [of the
Islamikaze] on the Israeli usurper will be his realizing that his
existence is temporary - They have become completely convinced that their
existence in the region is temporary - Remove the Apache from the
equation, leave them one on one with the Palestinian people with the only
weapon being dynamite, then you will see all the Israelis leave, because
among them there is not even one Israeli man willing to don a belt of
dynamite."

"On the strategic level, there must be a pan-Arab plan to reach our goal.
The goal of all of us is to liberate Palestine from the Israeli
aggressors. To use words that some people no longer like to use today: 'We
will throw Israel into the sea.' There is no middle ground. Co-existence
is total nonsense - The real means of dealing with Israel directly is
those who blow themselves up. According to what I see in the battle arena,
there is no other way by the pure, noble Palestinian bodies. This is the
only Arab weapon there is, and anyone who says otherwise is a conspirator.
I regret having to use these terms, but Arab politicians and journalists
who condemn this fida'i movement are trying to impose such ideas on us to
appease the West - The Palestinian body is the only means in this battle."

If this is what an educated scientist has in store for Israel, and what
the television serving Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the supposedly 'moderate'
and 'peaceful' countries, has to say, then one wonders whether any
accommodation is possible between the parties, or whether the
identification of the Jews and Israel as a permanent enemy of the Arabs
and Muslims is something immutable that makes them the strategic target
whatever the circumstances.

...not only is Israel identified as an enemy, but also Jews and Zionism.
As such, they have to be
fought first, and put, as they indeed are, at the forefront and top
priority of the Muslim struggle against the West. Heads of the Islamist
movement, and certainly the Islamikaze groups, from Bin-Laden's al-Qa'ida
to Sheikh Yassin of the Hamas, from Sheikh Tantawi of the al-Azhar to the
field operatives in the name of Allah all over the globe, have subscribed
to this doctrine and are pursuing it to the best of their ability.
