that's Egypt

possibly notoriety and world medias will shield them forcing the
authorities to give them an effective protection against any direct
assault

on a longer term that would be better for thme to search for asylum
in some european country as Sweden as yet happened for some egyptian
intellectuals charged of apostasy

it is interesting the author noticed the difference existing in Egypt
from the time he leaved it, it has been noticed by many other
expatriated

the Egypt of the King and of Nasser was a very different one

some details about Hegazis case:

ISLAM: EGYPT; CHRISTIAN CONVERT DESERVES DEATH, AL AZHAR

(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, AUGUST 14 - According to the rector of the faculty
of Islamic research at the Al Azhar University in Cairo, Soad Saleh,
Egyptian citizen Mohamed Ahmed Hegazy, born Muslim and converted to
Christianity nine years ago, is an apostate and deserves
death. "Those who renounce Islam are apostates and deserve to be
killed," Saleh told ANSAmed adding: "moreover if he shows off and is
congratulated for leaving Islam making photographs together with his
wife next to the Gospel". However Soad Saleh explained that "this
does not mean that regular people have to kill him, but that this is
a duty of the state and of those who enforce the law". The academic
also underlined that "apostates who do not show off and do not
announce publicly their apostasy are no liable to death". Hegazi, a
25-year-old political activist, now fears for his life after
receiving death threats. The trouble began when asked that he be
recognised as Christian on his identity card - he created newspaper
headlines and shocked the public's opinion. "I am in hiding now, far
from the security services and other people," he said, adding he
receives almost daily death threats on his mobile phone, despite the
frequent change of number. According to Hegazi, the danger comes not
only from the extremists, because even an ordinary citizen could kill
him, convinced he is serving Islam. But the young man says he is
determined he will not flee abroad, despite the fact that he does not
enjoy support in his homeland, not even from the Coptic Church.
Hegazi converted when he was 16 and is now requesting his religion to
be changed in his official documents. His wife has also converted to
Christianity and now both have lost the support of their respective
families. Hegazìs father-in-law has even threatened to turn to the
court to force a divorce and return his daughter "even dead".
