...the right-wing manages, through hook or crook
in more-or-less of a 'democratic' election, to take
over the government, and, in the aftermath, rigging
the elections so that they can control any future
ones, while, at the same time, preserving the outward
semblance of democracy?
What, in other words, happens if democracy fails,
by permitting itself to be extinguished in the process
of a democratic activity?
If the possibility of restoring democracy by
democratic means has been eradicated?
What if the new situation depends on results
which show the right wing winning, regardless of how
the votes went, and the press doesn't report any
crookedness?
We have to admit that, in the light of the
elections of 2000 and 2004, not only does this
possibility exist, but that there are in existence in
the U.S.A., elements which would attempt to
bring about just such a result.
It used to be a common accusation of the right
wing that "No
Communist government has ever, or WOULD ever, give up
power without an armed uprising against them. Since
experiences in the USSR, Nicaragua, Poland, the GDR,
Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, etc., have
proven that they may not WANT to, and may not enjoy
it, but, if the people overwhelmingly are ready to
change things, they are willing to acquiesce.
However, the shoe on the other foot, such as the
(pro-) Socialist Revolutions in 1920's Hungary, (see
Bela Kun), and Germany, (see Karl Liebknect and Rosa
Luxemburg), and, more recently, Iranian Mossadegh,
Indonesian Sukharno, Sandinista Nicaragua, Guatemalan
Arbenz, Chilean Allende, Tupamaro Uruguay, and so on
ad infinitum, everywhere the C.I.A. has gone with its
bloody hand-ful of dollars and assassins' knives, the
partisans of "free"
enterprise are never willing to give up what they
control. The last time such an impasse occurred in
the U.S.A. was during the Civil War, when there were
two irreconcilable groups -- pro-
slavery agriculturalists and pro-industrial
capitalists, fought out the capitalist revolution with
the bloodiest loss of life in military history.
Since the victims of any kind of anti-government
action are the people OUT of power, it is much more
desirable that a change occur peacefully and
democratically. There is no question about that. The
people of our country unquestionably will support and
have faith in democracy. We believe that the people
will vote the right way if they sare given the facts
before voting, and the voting will be fair because our
society is based on that notion.
Our whole contest as this point is to protect the
democratic process,and if we support the peoples'
demands the strongest, the fullest, while at the same
time warning of the danger of right-wing
double-dealing, if the right DOES try to play this
card, we will be the ones who will be seen to be the
ones who understood best the danger.
More and more people are bringing up the danger
of a right-wing coup d'etat, a suspension of
elections, or what-have-you in the way of
destroying-democracy-in-order-to-save-it. This would
be a catastrophe in any terms. Would we be "Good
Germans" like the Germans were, or are Yankees REALLY
different?
