Not bad, Warren. However, I think you are thinking of the mitochondrial DNA from a female common ancestor of us all, but she came from Africa. She is the only Eve we who live now can all claim. There is also a genetic Adam from whom whom we male humans are all (those living today) descended, but I am not sure of the genetic aspect he contributed (possibly the Y chromosome). Chrosomal Adam, however, did not live at the same time as Mitochondrial Eve, missing her by many many thousands of years. I take your point about who got there first, however. Nobody promised anybody any land, especially not any of the gods. Also, just to clarify, there were no people (no primates even) when the earth sported only one continent. James A. I was under the impression that Hank was giving us a little heavy-handed satire -- not especially funny, but the issue has been turned into a morbid joke. "Gondwana" is the solitary land mass that existed before it broke up into continents. Every person now alive is the inheritor to a claim on Gondwana. (See N.B. at bottom.) Any child-bearing couples whose children have at least two children and this is repeated for four or more generations, are related, in this modern day, to every other person living. Q.E.D.: Every person on earth has a claim to a part of the inheritance left her or him by some distant Gondwanan relative. This whole thing of a zero-sum world in which you don't win unless I lose, and no body stops to think that we can both win more if we are working to make sure OUR kids eat more, NOT more than each other, but MORE THAN EACH DID BEFORE. THE FORMER, competition, creates obesity and diabetes, the latter, CO-OPERATION, creates wealth. The DNA studies show that the DNA which all living people have in common, came from some woman living somewhere in Central Asia a few thousand years ago -- maybe Kyrghizstan. She married a foreigner and left there, because when strangers would ask, "Whadda they call this place, anyway?" she would not be able to pronounce it for these ancestors of Ernest Hemingway.
