Yeah! *dances in the snow*
Just in case you wonder why "Pod::Simple in the core and a new maintainer
for it" makes me so happy - read on below.
Best wishes,
Tels
To make a long story short:
* I wanted to add custom paragraphs to POD so that you can do:
=head1 DESCRIPTION
=begin graph
[ Server ] -- HTTP --> [ Client ]
=end graph
The Server connects to the Client using HTTP.
And end up with this in ASCII (or Unicode), done by Graph::Easy.
+--------+ HTTP +--------+
| Server | ------> | Client |
+--------+ +--------+
The Server connects to the Client using HTTP.
Likewise for HTML. (could contain then HTML, ascii, SVG or PNGs)
I focussed on Pod::Simple::HTML and thought that I could just subclass it.
While that was very easy, it never worked properly - my graph contents
were not at the right place - bascially sometimes my routine was called
early (at the start at the document) or a few paragraphs early or late
etc. It was also not clear how and where to exactly output the result of
the graph.
So it worked in theory, and in praxis the resulting document was
garbled. :/
I exchanged emails with the former maintainer from Pod::Simple, Sean
Burke, and he said he tries to find time to look into it. Unfortunately,
he never found the time - and sadly my own tries to fix this issue were
fruitless (took a long time experimenting and hacking without solving the
basic problem).
So, I am now excited that maybe the new maintainer can find some time and
insight, and/or I can submit a bugreport about Pod::Simple (yes, I know,
slightly unfair of me :)
Also, when Pod::Simple is in the core, it will be accessible to more
people, so my custom pod-translators with graph code in it has a better
chance to be used/accepted :)
PS: Sean, this is in no way meant offensive to you - I know how it is to
have to many things todo and too little time for everything. And I
consider it a good thing that Pod::Simple can find more widespread usage
- - it is after all, quite good (with the minor flaw of subclasing - and I
am sure "we" can fix that in time).
So thanx for your (Russ, Sean and Allison) work!
Thanx for listening,
Tels
