poe_kernel->run doesn't finish

I've been using variations of the great example code Randal Schwartz described in his column

I've moved up to RedHat 8.0,
perl 5.8.0 built for i386-linux-thread-multi
poe 0.24

This code does not end cleanly now (as it did in earlier versions of the above, except my linux was Mandrake 8.1).


Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix his sample code so it ends cleanly and returns to the command prompt after running?

(Thanks for the help to a newbie. I didn't find any earlier messages that I could recognize this problem in.)
