I have just committed to CVS a version of POE that includes support for sockets in Tk under ActivePerl. In that environment it polls for socket activity every 1/10 second. This seems incredibly wasteful to me, but it's the only known way to work with Tk and sockets under ActivePerl.
Non-ActivePerl environments still take advantage of Tk's fileevent services, so you should see less CPU usage on UNIX and related systems. We'll be happy to use fileevent() with ActivePerl once they begin working again. People who need Windows + Tk + POE are encouraged to try the CVS version and let us know whether it works. For example, POE::Component::IRC should magically be working now. Your advanced use will help us deliver a more robust 0.27 release.
