I tried the example, and it works here.  It does not block on the first
keystroke like you report.

I must conclude that there is a difference between our systems.
POE::Wheel::ReadLine needs to be updated to handle that difference.
Which OS are you using?  Which version of Perl?  Are you using the most
recent version of POE?
