Thanks! That telnet snippet was the hint I needed. I added a debug switch 
to dump all output, and it turns out the goof wasn't in &irc_433 at all, 
it was in my &nick() wrapper.

It's not quite right yet, but this should be what I needed to move on and 
get it fixed. Thanks!
