Thanks Markus but I was hoping for a solution that would "just work"
that is doesn't rely on a special version.

I am using perl 5.14.2 without ithreads because the collegue who
installed apache/mod_perl could only get it to compile and test without
threading.

And since the older version works just fine on several machines and
others have the same problem my hope is that it is 1) not too difficult
and 2) worth wile to make it work. As I said I am willing to help
debugging as good as I can.
