I mostly agree with Andy's remarks about java.awt.Image and POI
being server-sided in that we shouldn't return anything more
than a byte array. I'd say: we shouldn't do that in the first
place. Links to information on how to turn the byte[] into a
java.awt.Image (or whatever) are of cource very appreciated. We
could incorporate them into our documentation for developers
that actually want to create image.
Other than Andy I can imagine that someone writes a convenience
method getThumbnailAsImage(). The *creation* of a java.awt.Image
is quite different from *displaying* it. A server could very
well create an image, send it to a client, store it in a file or
do anything else with it.
In other area POI turns M$ data structures into more or less
corresponding Java data structures. Why shouldn't we do so with
image? And since java.awt.Image is not even POI-specific but a
standard Java class, I'd say: go for it!
