Usually running BiffView and comparing against the output of a 'good' excel file gives some insight into what the 'bad' file lacks that could be a cause of the problem. You could either do this yourself and maybe report any interesting findings that you think are related to the underlying cause or just create issue with attachments for now.
If you do create an issue, be sure to give as many relevant details that would help reproducing the behaviour.
