Hi All, This year I'd like to get out to the ApacheCon. U/F its west coast which is a bit of a trek for me, but I'd love to do it to meet some of the Apache folks, some of the various people using POI, and any of the POI people who can make it.
So I thought a nice way to do that would be to do a session on POI. I think this year it should be pretty focused on HSSF in particular just because its the easiest thing to give a user tutorial on (as its reached a certainly level of maturity). Secondly, I'd like to provide a special focus on reporting using HSSF through Cocoon. Its an area I think that is neglected as far as the publicity goes. Since it became part of Cocoon more folks are finding it and using it, but its not attracted as wide of an audience as the API even though its featureset is pretty close. Anyhow, I'd like to submit my proposal to the POI users. Is this something you'd be interested in? Would you likely attend the ApacheCon in Los Vegas (August)? Is there anything else you'd like to hear? Is the timeframe (2h) too long? Too short? Anyhow, no idea if it will be approved or not, but I'd like to make it YOUR presentation so please provide feedback. Thanks, Andy Proposal is below: Submitter: Andrew Oliver <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Title: Java & XML based reporting to Excel with Apache Jakarta POI and Cocoon Level: Novice Style: Presentation Orientation: Developer Duration: 120 Categories: Case Study,Java,New Technologies,Windows,XML Abstract: Attendees will get an overview of the Jakarta POI project. Then, learn to input/output to/from OLE 2 Compound Document format using the Jakarta POI APIs (POIFS). Next, learn to output to Excel using the POI's HSSF Java APIs. Next, learn to read XLS files using the HSSF event-based API. As well as learn to create XML based reports to XLS using the HSSF Serializer for Cocoon 2. If there is time left we'll gossup about future plans and whats in the works for POI 3.0 (including MS Word support), Q&A, etc. This session will be for both the developer implementing a POI and/or Cocoon based solution and for the technology-engaged businessperson who wants to understand how they can integrate a their Java based solution with their Excel-based internal and external customers. The session will be casual, lively, entertaining and no-holds barred.. Comments: Some kind of projector I can hook to my laptop and get stuff on the screen. Maybe a microphone if the place is large. I'd like to actually bring in some Poi. (A Hawaiian food) and serve it to the audience. Its supposed to be quite disgusting. It may require refrigeration so if my proposal is accepted we should talk about the logistics of procuring (I volunteer), storing it and serving it/etc. I'll see if I can get other POI folks to suffer...er I mean present with me.. If not, I'm fine alone. I've given talks before. I'll cover two audiences. Business types looking for a what/how and those who would actually be working with the stuff. -- http://www.superlinksoftware.com - software solutions for business http://jakarta.apache.org/poi - Excel/Word/OLE 2 Compound Document in Java http://krysalis.sourceforge.net/centipede - the best build/project structure a guy/gal could have! - Make Ant simple on complex Projects!
