The reason why we make you select 16 or 8 bit strings is because Excel writes out strings as compressed if it detects that the high byte is always zero. It's basically a space saving mechanism. Previously the code detected this automatically buy I assume it was decided that this was too slow and so the user now makes this decision. It would be interesting to actually time the difference between using auto detection or not.
We plan to update the documentation so the encoding option is more obvious.
