yeah...that probably shouldn't even be public... After 2.0 I plan to do some massive API cleanup. (Not that its particularly bad but patches + lack of foresight in some areas makes for some messiness)
The new memory model I'm working on that will debut in a commercially supported HSSF called SOA Workbook will also go in 3.0. (which will give me license to do the API cleanup).
