Yes....and no. There is VERY little difference between XP and 97 (and even less between 2000 and 97). There are a few little binary records that are not required, and hence we do not write them in the file (maximum compatibility).
However you can read an XP file, you can write a file that XP can read just fine, and you can modify one. However, while Microsoft has the goal of writing records in the file that make it incompatible, we don't.

If at some point there is an actual new feature that we need to support we'd make it configurable, but the goal of the project is to support 97+ (meaning Excel 97 users should still be able to read it).
