That last remark was just that, a remark, directed at nobody in particular, so i
dont quite see what the fuss is about.

I have looked at your bug, but without an EBCDIC machine i really dont know how
to proceed, given that the files open fine in my machine. I suspect its
basically an encoding issue.

It could, for example be an artifact of the JVM implementation or the
InputStream implementation. Can you rule that out? how do you expect any of us
to figure that out? What does a "binary" ftp really mean in the context of a
ASCII-EBCDIC conversion .. is it 8-bit safe? It might be a silly question to
ask, but i have not clue, and i suspect most people on this list dont.

Does your offer for help include running all the poi unit tests on such a
machine, and sending us the results? you can certainly do that without any
further input from us at all, i suppose.

We certainly do get a lot of codepage problems, and all of the solutions we
have implemented are from people who speak, and have access to desktops builds
of, various languages. I personally would be totally unable to debug an issue
with Chinese excel sheets in poi, for example.
