This is a known bug in HDF. See Bug 17208 - http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=17208. You will also find a proposed patch attached to the bug that will probably fix the problem for you. At least it did for me. However, the patch is for classes in the org.apache.poi.hdf.model package.
