For the record it isn't DMCA, its the US's draconian encryption laws. These are largely founded on WWII munitions laws. Most software folks think that these are increadibly silly at this point. It would only make sense if the US had some kind of tactical advantage in encryption which it most decidedly does not. Unfortunately, a side effect of these laws also ensure that we never will. Sadly, there is not currently an outlet for this politically, leaders of both parties remain ignorant of this issue and continue to pass such laws. Meaning there is no one you can vote for who supports sane laws regulating encryption. And there is no sane regulation alternative known currently.

Basically, we have to reverse engineer the encrypting algorithm and that's not safe in this country (blasted DMCA!).
I believe POI still lets you manipulate a protected workbook anyway since it's a GUI restriction after all. Hope all goes well.
