Hi,
you can use the following API from POI
org.apache.poi.hssf.usermodel
HSSFFont is a class under this package. In that class there are methods like
getColor(), getItalic(), getBoldweight() etc.

Yes POI can read formatted excel file. It can read any formatted data. But
not any special characters.
