Detecting file type and extracting title

I'd like to use POI to figure out whether a file is an Excel file (not 
only the latest BIFF variant but earlier as well), a PowerPoint file, a 
Word file or none of those. Also, if it is an MS Office file, I'd like 
to extract the title from the file metadata.

I guess this is something other have done before. Is there any 
open-source code for doing this?
