I solved my problem a few weeks ago, but forgot to post the answer. I used an old version of POI. Now I use a more recent binary version (2.0 final, this is not the most recent) and it works fine, I can read a template file containing a wmf file. I precise that my template is very plain, it contains only a wmf file (70 Kb) and a text sentence. If someone has encountered problems with 2.5, I won't change my 2.0 for it...
