I think you've misunderstood me Raghavendra, I don't insert the images into the spreadsheet, they are already there in the template file that I used to add my data to. There is no way (currently) of inserting images into a spreadsheet using POI.

I have images in my generated excel documents but this is done by the
template I use already containing the images.

Also it is worth noting that if you use this method and then resize a
column that the image sits on (annoyingly) the image itself will get
re-sized! I've put a bug report in
(http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=27153) but still
waiting for some nice person to fix :)
