i think the HSSF support for workbook linking is weak at best.  If you 
can find a bug in bugzilla that fits this precisely, vote for it!

I hope to have time to contribute in the near future but voting for it 
can't hurt.

This is rather stupid as the cell range is basically just one cell,
hence the minimum is just the value of the cell itself!
 
The error does in fact occur with any valid cell range. Ive checked!
