You will often see the message because POI creates a
file in a format called - I think - BIFF-8. You can
think of this as being Excel 97 in reality and because
you are most likely opening the file using a later
version of Excel, then you will see this message.

The second point relates to the fact that POI will not
automatically recalculate the formulae for you
whenever you change the contents of a cell using the
API. Typically, you need to manipulate the worksheet
using Excel itself to see any automatic recalculation.
